Actions of the New Government of Claudia Sheinbaum in Sustainability and Mobility

Since arriving at the government of Mexico City in 2018, Claudia Sheinbaum implemented various actions focused on improving sustainability and mobility in the capital. Her administration sought to reduce pollution and promote the use of greener means of transportation, aligning with global commitments on climate change.

As a result of her management, cablebuses, trolleybuses and the metrobus with an electric line were implemented in CDMX; The modernization of the light rail was carried out and the use of bicycles was promoted with new cycle lanes, –among other efforts–, encompassing everything in a single integrated mobility card. Her administration placed a strong emphasis on the electrification of public transportation; a measure that will not only contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions but will also improve air quality in the metropolis.

In June 2024, Sheinbaum announced the creation of a National Energy Plan, which will allow development towards renewable energy sources, and will also seek to expand electromobility. (2)

Current Situation of Mexico in relation to the Paris Agreement (2024)

In 2024, Mexico is at a crucial point regarding compliance with its Paris Agreement commitments. Nationally, the country has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030. (3)

Claudia Sheinbaum’s government will continue to align its local policies with these commitments, emphasizing the need for cities to contribute effectively to reducing emissions. This translates into a greater boost to electric mobility and the promotion of renewable energies, both in transport and urban infrastructure.

To cite some examples, with the aim of promoting sustainable mobility, the president announced the creation of Olinia (4)– to move in Nahuatl language–, a 100% mexican electric vehicle, assembled entirely in the country by young talent. Sonora is the state that is positioning itself as the possible headquarters for the production of Olinia, taking advantage of the opportunities of the “Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan” (5), which seeks the transition towards a sustainable society and promoting renewable energies, contributing to the decarbonization of the economy of Mexico. As part of these efforts, the public presentation of the first Mexican electric bus was also held in CDMX: Taruk – roadrunner in the Yaqui language. (6)

These vehicles are expected to lay the foundation for a new era of electric transportation with environmental and health benefits.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s approach to mobility and sustainability reflects a comprehensive vision that seeks to transform the way citizens interact with their urban environment.
